Kashmir shivers as night chill continues, Pahalgam coldest at minus 6.2 degree Celsius

Srinagar, Jan 02 (KNO): Amid persistent dry spell, the minimum temperature continued to settle below freezing point across the Valley on Tuesday. However, the weatherman here has predicted light snowfall over isolated extreme higher reaches in between January 4-5. According to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), in the ongoing 40-day harshest winter period—Chillai-Kalan, the mercury has continued to settle below freezing point. As per the data, Pahalgam in South Kashmir was coldest in Kashmir where the mercury settled at minus 6.2 degree Celsius. Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir however, shivered at minus 4.8 degree Celsius while Qazigund in South Kashmir has recorded a low of minus 4.4 degree Celsius. Gulmarg, a famous ski-resort, has recorded a low of minus 4.0 degree Celsius. Kupwara in north Kashmir has recorded a low of minus 4.6 degree Celsius while Kokernag recorded a minimum temperature of minus 2.7 degree Celsius. Director Meteorological department, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad told KNO that mainly dry weather is expected till January 3rd while in between January 4-5, generally cloudy with dry weather over plains is expected during the period, but there is a possibility of very light snow over isolated extreme higher reaches. Furthermore, he said the weather would again remain mainly dry from January 6-7. “Overall, no significant weather activity is expected till 7th January,” he said. Also, he said that generally cloudy weather with possibility of light rain, snow is expected over isolated higher reaches on January 08—(KNO)
